When I adopted Poppy, getting a dog was the last thing on my mind. It all started at a Holiday Market where my mom and I stumbled upon a local rescue organization with a bunch of adorable, adoptable dogs. Among them was a little pup wearing pajamas—utterly irresistible. I wanted to say hello, but this tiny nugget had other plans. She crawled right into my lap, and in that moment, I knew: I was head over heels in love.
However, life had other ideas. I had just begun a new job and was focused on saving money. Getting a dog wasn’t part of the plan. My mom and I walked away from the market, hoping my puppy fever would pass.
Spoiler alert: It didn’t.
The next day, I contacted the foster mom and let her know I was interested. Sunday arrived, and they visited my apartment to assess if we were a good match. During the visit, the foster mom mentioned that although the rescue had named her Naomi, they affectionately called her “Puppy” at home. That’s when I blurted out, “Funny enough, one of my top name choices is Poppy.” The foster mom froze, looked at me, and said, “Last night, I dreamt about this exact conversation. You were adamant about renaming her Poppy.” Goosebumps ran down my spine—it was meant to be. Poppy became mine, and I became hers.
And so, despite my initial reservations, the universe conspired to bring Poppy into my life. Sometimes, the best things happen when we least expect them.
