Beaver Island
Grand Island is a treasure trove of trails and spots to explore, and Beaver Island State Park is one of its gems. While dogs aren’t allowed on the main beach, we discovered a hidden gem thanks to a friend’s recommendation—a cozy little cove near the marina that’s perfect for our furry friends.
Why We Love Beaver Island Cove:
One of the standout features of this cove is the natural rock barrier. This barrier is a lifesaver as it prevents Poppy from venturing out into the Niagara River, where she could be swept away by the strong currents. The calm waters within the cove create a safe and controlled environment for Poppy to swim and play.
The lack of current also makes it an ideal spot for playing fetch. We love bringing her bumpers and watching her joyfully retrieve them from the water. The enclosed area allows us to relax, knowing that she is safe and secure while enjoying her swim.
Additional Highlights of Beaver Island Cove:
- Scenic Surroundings: The cove is surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque views, providing a tranquil setting for both dogs and their owners. It’s a great place to unwind and enjoy nature.
- Accessibility: Located within Beaver Island State Park, the cove is easy to reach and offers convenient parking near the marina. It’s an excellent spot for a quick visit or a longer outing.

Como Lake Park
Another fantastic spot to visit in Lancaster is Como Lake Park. This park is brimming with activities and provides an excellent environment for Poppy to swim and explore. The park’s expansive grounds offer a variety of recreational options, making it a favorite destination for both locals and visitors.
Why We Love Lake Como at Como Lake Park:
The rocky sections along the shore of Lake Como make it easy for you to wade into the water with your dog. These areas provide a natural and comfortable entry point into the lake, allowing both you and your pup to enjoy a refreshing dip. The shallow, rocky sections are particularly suitable for dogs who are new to swimming or prefer staying close to the shore.
One of the unique aspects of this spot is the gentle current in the lake. While the current prevents us from bringing any toys, it doesn’t diminish Poppy’s excitement. Instead of playing fetch with her usual bumpers, I throw small rocks for her to chase. This alternative game keeps her engaged and active, providing plenty of exercise and fun.
Additional Highlights of Como Lake Park:
- Dog Park: One of the standout features of Como Lake Park is its designated dog park. This fenced area provides a safe and spacious environment for dogs to run, play, and socialize off-leash. It’s a great spot for Poppy to make new friends and burn off some energy.
