Living in the heart of the city, Poppy and I have grown to cherish the importance of safe and enjoyable walks amidst the urban landscape. Collar or Harness?
Deciding between a collar and a harness for your furry friend may seem like a daunting task, but fear not, as both options offer unique advantages. Here’s our guide to help you make the right choice:
- Martingale Collar: For our everyday strolls, we rely on a martingale collar like the one from Wolfgang. What I love about it is that it automatically tightens when Poppy pulls, providing extra security and peace of mind. Martingales work well for dogs with “noodle necks,” such as greyhounds.
- 2 Hounds No Pull Harness: Recently, we’ve started using this harness for runs and hikes. The front clip helps prevent pulling, keeping Poppy in sync with my pace. The thinner straps and velvet belly strap minimize chafing. Plus, they come in a variety of colors!
Whether you opt for a collar or a harness ultimately depends on your dog’s individual needs and preferences. Consider factors such as their breed, size, and behavior during walks to determine which option will provide the most comfort and control. With the right choice in hand, you can embark on your walks with confidence, knowing that your furry companion is equipped for a safe and enjoyable adventure.
Leash Selection
A sturdy leash is essential for control and comfort. One leash I have really liked is the Ruffwear 5ft Lead. The padded handle ensures comfort during any adventure. For more relaxed walks, we switch to the Flexi Retractable Leash. However, it’s crucial to use flexi leashes responsibly, ensuring your dog is under control and avoiding letting the leash extend too far in busy or unsafe areas.
Poop Bags
Poop bags are essential for being a responsible and respectful dog owner during your walks. I prefer to buy my poop bags in bulk from Amazon; these are my favorite for their durability and eco-friendliness. But what’s equally important as having poop bags is a poop bag holder. This handy contraption allows you to store your used poop bags, keeping your hands free during your walk. It’s especially helpful when you’re juggling multiple dogs and multiple poops.
Treat Pouches
Rewarding good behavior is crucial. I carry two different treat pouches:
- Canada Pooch Walking Pack: Recently added to my walking gear, and I am absolutely obsessed with it. I got the reflective pouch primarily for safety during early or late walks, but it’s versatile enough to be worn crossbody or as a hip pack. It’s spacious too, easily accommodating treats, poop bags, a fetch toy, water, and more.
- PetAmi Dog Treat Pouch: This versatile pouch holds various treats and even extra poop bags. Practical and convenient!
- Navaris Silicone Dog Treat Pouches: Easy to clean, these silicone pouches provide quick access to treats. The attached clip ensures you’re always ready for positive reinforcement.
The Extras
- Dog Collar Light: These compact lights are a game-changer for nighttime walks. Rechargeable and easy to clip onto a harness, leash, or collar, they provide an extra layer of safety when venturing out after dark. In my opinion, they’re an absolute must-have during the winter months when the sun sets early.
- Gorilla Grip Leak Proof Portable Dog Water Bottle: When it comes to hot walks and outdoor adventures, hydration is key for both you and your furry companion. The Gorilla Grip Leak Proof Portable Dog Water Bottle is your trusty sidekick. Poppy knows the drill as soon as you pull it out – it’s time for an adventure! What I love about this design is that it doesn’t waste a drop of water. Stay hydrated, stay happy!
Don’t forget, each stroll with your faithful companion is more than just a walk; it’s an invitation to strengthen your bond and embark on an adventure together. So, don’t hesitate—gather your essential gear, leash up, and venture out onto the pavement with your furry sidekick by your side! Whether it’s exploring new sights, sniffing out intriguing scents, or simply enjoying each other’s company, every step you take is an opportunity for shared experiences and cherished memories. So, seize the moment, embrace the journey, and let the bond between you and your canine companion flourish with every stride you take together.
